Rocca Riolo Terme

Municipality of Riolo Terme

RIOLO TERME (RA) | 1998-2000

The Fortress of Riolo Terme, the ancient stronghold of the Senio Valley, was built as a garrison along with the village at the end of the 14th century by the city of Bologna. Since 1472, la Rocca underwent many renovations but still retained its great beauty. Maintaining its defensive function over time, it is a magnificent example of military fortification that followed the evolution of late medieval offensive techniques. The first nucleus, still quite intact and well visible, underwent changes and additions, in particular following the advent of the artillery. La Rocca belongs to the typology known as ”transition” where medieval and Renaissance architectural features were added such as the moat and the trap holes for the plumbing shot or the maneuver chambers with fire mouths for the grazing flanking shot.

Description of the work_ The intervention was divided into diagnostics and restoration of the moat of the fortress and the recovery of the historic walls of the village as well as the restoration of the decorations. As far as the moat is concerned, structural consolidation of the foundations had been carried out by inserting poles, micro piers and continuous septa in reinforced concrete to support the neighboring buildings and in order not to subject the ancient wall to the pressure of the ground. The missing parts have been restored with salvaged bricks, leaving a small gap between the new and the old in order to show the two moments of the intervention without highlighting too much diversity. During the structural works an ancient Roman bridge was discovered and highlighted for its archaeological preservation.

The restoration of the historical walls of the town consisted in the elimination of any addition, from the simple furnishing elements to the vegetation signage, up to the later wall additions. Subsequently, the ground was excavated at the base, with depths varying from a few to several meters, and an illuminated path that runs at the foot of the entire wall was created. A collapsed part was rebuilt again with a reinforced concrete buttress covered with external bricks. In this area there are two new flights of stairs, one to access the walls by foot and the other to better connect the historical part of the town with a parking area, until then inaccessible because of the natural differences in the height of the land.
